John Cowburn (Blackburn & Darwen Photography Club) is a keen traveller and accomplished photographer, with particular interest in capturing Landscape and Railway imagery. Hiking in the Dolomites: The Dolomite Mountains are situated in the north of Italy close to the Austrian border.  They are geologically unique, a very hard type of limestone, and very dramatic with their white craggy outlines. The area is now a UNESCO Heritage site. The first world war saw the battles between the Italians and the Austro-Hungarians in the mountains where they built numerous tunnels and high-level routes that led to the modern day sport of Via Feratta giving access to some extremely exposed ridges.  John will cover some of that as well as the main topic - the dramatic route from north to south Alta Via 1, a multi day hut to hut trek through the mountains, which didn't exactly go to plan as you will see.  The photos are quite spectacular!
